RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Most influenza cases without warning signs can be managed at home, with adequate rest and sufficient fluid intake playing an important role in recovery. The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has also advised people not to assume that every influenza infection requires antiviral medication, such as oseltamivir.
Director General of Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices at the Ministry of Health, Lucia Rizka Andalusia, said people with mild influenza can generally recover through supportive care at home.
“Get enough rest, stay hydrated, and drink enough fluids to prevent dehydration and shortness of breath, so that not everyone needs to take antiviral medication,” she said at a press conference on Monday, September 28, 2026.
On the same occasion, Pompini Agustina Sitompul, a pulmonology and respiratory medicine specialist, said influenza can have varying symptoms and does not necessarily develop into a severe illness.
“This disease actually has quite varied characteristics and symptoms, and it can resolve on its own—what we call a self-limiting disease,” she said.
For people recovering at home, maintaining adequate hydration and getting enough rest are among the basic measures that can support recovery. People should also monitor their symptoms and seek medical attention if their condition deteriorates rather than attempting to manage severe symptoms on their own.
Pompini said severe influenza can be marked by symptoms such as coughing accompanied by shortness of breath that requires oxygen support. Such symptoms indicate that the illness requires assessment and treatment at a health facility.
Certain groups also require closer attention because they may face a higher risk of complications. The Ministry of Health identifies young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with weakened immune systems and those with underlying health conditions as groups that should receive particular attention.
While influenza can often resolve on its own, people should remain alert to warning signs and seek medical care when necessary. The key approach for mild cases is adequate rest, sufficient fluid intake and monitoring, while treatment for more serious cases should be determined by health professionals.
