RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Keji beling (Strobilanthes crispus) is an Indonesian medicinal plant traditionally used in herbal preparations, particularly those associated with urinary tract health. The leaves contain flavonoids, polyphenols, minerals, and other phytochemicals that have attracted research interest.
A study published in the journal Journal of Ethnopharmacology reported that Strobilanthes crispus contains bioactive compounds with antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.
These compounds are believed to contribute to the plant’s traditional medicinal value. One of the most recognized traditional uses of keji beling is related to urinary system support.
The plant has traditionally been consumed as herbal tea, and researchers have investigated its potential diuretic properties and mineral composition.
Keji beling has also been studied for its role in kidney stone-related research. Experimental studies have examined whether plant extracts may influence crystal formation and urinary mineral balance, although clinical evidence remains limited.
The presence of polyphenols has also encouraged research into its potential applications in natural health products. Extracts from medicinal plants such as keji beling are increasingly evaluated for standardized herbal formulations.
Despite its traditional popularity, keji beling should not replace medical treatment for kidney or urinary disorders. Individuals with kidney disease or those taking medication affecting fluid balance should consult healthcare professionals.
