RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Brotowali (Tinospora crispa) is one of Indonesia’s traditional medicinal plants known for its intensely bitter taste and long history in herbal medicine. The plant contains alkaloids, diterpenoids, flavonoids, and glycosidic compounds that have attracted scientific attention, particularly in metabolic health research.

According to a review published in the journal Phytochemistry Reviews, Tinospora crispa contains various bioactive compounds associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and glucose-related activities. Researchers have investigated these compounds to understand the mechanisms behind its traditional use.

One of the most studied applications of brotowali is its potential relationship with blood sugar regulation.

In addition, experimental studies have examined extracts of the plant for their effects on glucose metabolism, although human evidence remains limited and requires further clinical confirmation.

Brotowali has also been investigated for immune-related and anti-inflammatory effects. Certain compounds in the plant may influence inflammatory pathways and cellular responses, supporting continued research into its pharmacological potential.

Because of its traditional reputation, brotowali is often included in Indonesian herbal formulations. Researchers continue to explore ways to standardize extracts so that their active compounds can be measured consistently.

Although brotowali has a long history of use, excessive consumption of concentrated extracts should be avoided. Individuals taking diabetes medication or those with specific health conditions should consult healthcare professionals before using herbal supplements.
