RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Agarwood (Aquilaria malaccensis), known in Indonesia as gaharu, is one of the world’s most valuable aromatic plants due to its unique resin-producing properties. For centuries, agarwood has been used in perfumes, incense, traditional medicine, and spiritual practices because of its distinctive fragrance and calming aroma.

According to research published in the journal Molecules, agarwood essential oil contains sesquiterpenes and aromatic compounds that contribute to its characteristic scent and biological properties. These compounds are responsible for the high value of agarwood in fragrance and aromatherapy industries.

One of the most recognized applications of agarwood is aromatherapy. The aroma compounds are studied for their potential influence on relaxation, emotional comfort, and stress reduction through sensory pathways.

Scientific research has also examined agarwood extracts for antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities. Although many findings remain at laboratory stages, these studies provide insight into the biological potential of agarwood-derived compounds.

The perfume industry considers agarwood one of the most prestigious natural fragrance ingredients.

In addition, its rarity and complex aroma profile have encouraged sustainable cultivation and biotechnology research to protect natural populations.

Despite its popularity, agarwood products vary greatly depending on origin, processing method, and chemical composition. Responsible sourcing and standardized products are essential for maintaining quality and sustainability.
