RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – World Teachers’ Day is commemorated every October 5 to recognize the important role of teachers in educating, guiding, and shaping future generations. The annual observance also highlights the importance of supporting the teaching profession and strengthening its contribution to society.

World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated since 1994. It is organized annually by UNESCO and its partner organizations.

The date marks the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, an important international instrument addressing teachers’ rights, responsibilities, and professional standards.

In 2026, World Teachers’ Day carries the theme “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.” The theme emphasizes the need to stand with teachers by protecting the profession, advancing their status, and recognizing their contribution to shaping the future.

UNESCO highlights that teachers are working in an increasingly complex and changing environment. Digital technology, climate change, the need for inclusive education, and evolving social conditions are among the developments that continue to shape the teaching profession.

Support for teachers, therefore, goes beyond recognizing their work. It also includes providing decent working conditions, opportunities for professional development, and an environment that enables teachers to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

World Teachers’ Day also serves as an opportunity to reaffirm the connection between strong teachers and quality education. Teachers not only provide knowledge but also help students develop skills, values, and the ability to face the challenges of the future.

Through World Teachers’ Day 2026, UNESCO calls on stakeholders to strengthen the teaching profession and ensure that teachers’ voices are heard in education policymaking. Standing with teachers means helping build stronger education systems and a better future for all.
