RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s state-owned mining holding company MIND ID is expanding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) across the mining value chain, from exploration and production to mineral downstream processing and emissions monitoring.

This transformation is part of efforts to strengthen the national mineral industry's competitiveness amid the need to increase value-added processing and operate more efficiently.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of MIND ID, Dany Amrul Ichdan, said technological advancement means mining companies can no longer rely solely on the size of their mineral resources. The ability to interpret data and translate it into operational decisions has become a key factor in improving productivity and asset reliability.

“The value of AI does not lie in the model itself. Its value lies in safer decisions, more reliable assets, better resource discovery, and lower operational impact,” Dany said in Jakarta on Friday, September 11, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

He noted that AI deployment targets real challenges in mining operations, including worker safety. The MIND ID group uses AI-enabled fatigue management systems that provide early warnings when detecting signs of fatigue or microsleep among operators.

AI is also applied in production processes. AI vision technology monitors conveyor conditions and detects potential disruptions such as belt damage, improper material sizes, or contamination that could hinder production.

In mineral downstreaming, machine learning optimizes smelter operations, including the FeNi Rotary Kiln. This data-driven approach is designed to maintain process stability while improving mineral processing efficiency.

Digital technology adoption is also underway at PT Bukit Asam Tbk. (PTBA). Real-time operational data integration accelerates monitoring of mining activities and supports productivity improvements.

AI is even being used at the exploration stage through AI-enabled geologging, which speeds up rock core analysis and enhances the quality of drilling data, enabling stronger information-based exploration and investment decisions.

At the same time, MIND ID is developing energy and emissions intelligence systems that integrate data on asset reliability, process efficiency, fuel consumption, and emissions. These systems help companies identify energy efficiency opportunities and strengthen environmental impact management.

Dany said these developments mark a shift in Indonesia’s mining industry from resource-based competitiveness to competitiveness driven by technology, data, and knowledge.

“MIND ID is moving from resource advantage to intelligence advantage. We are committed to ensuring that Indonesia’s mining industry enters a more advanced phase by leveraging technological capabilities to create safer, more efficient, and more sustainable operations,” he said. ***
