House Encourages BYD's CSR Program to Empower Local Communities

RRI.CO.ID, Subang – Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Sugeng Suparwoto is urging BYD Auto Indonesia, a subsidiary of a Chinese automaker, BYD, to direct its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs toward community empowerment and strengthening the local economy. He hopes industries can create a trickle-down effect for communities in villages surrounding the industrial area.

Sugeng gave the example of developing catering businesses as one way to empower local communities. Locals in the surrounding area could be trained to establish catering businesses that meet required standards and supply food for industrial workers.

“I gave the example of educating local communities so they can establish certified catering businesses to supply food here. That is one form of empowerment,” Sugeng said after visiting the BYD Auto Indonesia facility in Subang, West Java, on Friday, 4 September 2026, together with other lawmakers.

In addition to catering, the national lawmaker said CSR programs could be directed toward infrastructure development, education, and environmental initiatives. They could also be allocated to broader community economic development through partnerships with micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises around the industrial area.

“Other areas would of course include road development, the environment, education, and broader economic empowerment, for example through partnerships with MSMEs in the surrounding area,” Sugeng, of the Nasdem Party, concluded.

In closing, the DPR said such programs should continue to be encouraged alongside the development of BYD’s newly inaugurated industrial operations in Subang. The House said collaboration among companies, the government, and local communities is expected to generate a multiplier effect from the industrial presence, while also strengthening Indonesia’s national industrial sector and improving people's welfare around the industrial area.

Earlier, BYD inaugurated its 108-hectare manufacturing facility in Subang on Thursday, 3 September 2026. The company stated the plant has a production capacity of up to 150,000 vehicles per year, supporting the development of Indonesia’s national automotive industry.
