RRI.CO.ID, Banda Aceh – Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is the main mosque in Banda Aceh, Aceh, and is recognized as a cultural heritage site. Located in the heart of Banda Aceh, the mosque serves not only as a place of worship for Muslims but also as an important part of Aceh’s social and political history and its resilience in the face of natural disasters.

According to the Aceh Culture and Tourism Agency, the initial construction of Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is often associated with the Aceh Sultanate under Sultan Iskandar Muda in 1612. However, some historical records indicate that its original foundations date back to the reign of Sultan Alauddin Riayat Syah.

The mosque’s architecture has undergone several transformations, particularly following its destruction by fire during the Dutch military aggression in 1873. Reconstruction was carried out by the Dutch colonial government as an effort at political reconciliation, resulting in a blend of Mughal architectural styles from India and local Acehnese influences.

A major turning point in the modern history of Baiturrahman Grand Mosque came on December 26, 2004. When a devastating tsunami struck the coast of Aceh, the mosque’s structure demonstrated significant resilience. Thousands of survivors sought refuge within the mosque complex, which at the time was one of the highest and most structurally robust places in the city center.

The building’s survival in the face of the tsunami’s powerful currents has been cited as evidence of the structural integrity of traditional and colonial architecture reinforced with modern materials. The event transformed the mosque from more than just a tourist attraction into a monument commemorating the resilience of the people of Aceh in confronting natural disasters.

Between 2015 and 2017, the mosque’s courtyard underwent a major revitalization, including the installation of 12 electrically operated umbrellas with hydraulic systems. The facilities were designed to expand the capacity of the prayer area and provide greater comfort for worshippers, while also adopting open-space architectural features commonly found at major mosques in the Middle East.

Management of the area is now governed by specific regulations intended to preserve the sanctity of the place of worship. Visitors are required to follow dress codes and standards of conduct within the mosque complex, in accordance with the Islamic law regulations applicable in Aceh.

Baiturrahman Grand Mosque continues to play a central role as a symbol of Islamic civilization in Aceh. Today, it brings together three important dimensions: historical preservation as a cultural heritage site, a center of disaster mitigation and resilience, and a religious tourism destination open to the public while upholding local values and traditions.
