RRI.CO.ID, Samarinda - The preservation of 17 cultural heritage sites in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, aims to safeguard historical legacy. Additionally, it serves as a regional strategy to strengthen the arts ecosystem, cultural tourism, and the creative economy.
“Preserving 17 cultural heritage sites, such as the Shiratal Mustaqim Mosque, Thien Ie Kong Temple, the National Awakening Monument, and the Tomb of La Mohang Daeng Mangkona, is among our top priorities. This initiative is crucial to maintaining the community’s collective memory,” said Head of the Cultural Division at Samarinda’s Education and Culture Agency, Barlin Hady Kusuma, in Samarinda on Sunday, August 2, 2026.
These historic sites are now being developed into alternative public spaces with strong educational value for students and the general public. Barlin said the management of the city’s cultural heritage sites is aligned with the Samarinda municipal administration’s long-term vision of making the city a center of civilization that is advanced and distinctive.
“We are trying to facilitate young people so they can use heritage sites as a means of learning history as well as a place to express artistic works,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
Efforts to physically protect the heritage sites are being accompanied by stronger local regulations so that historical locations are not eroded by land-use conversion.
Barlin added that cooperation with hundreds of art studios and local communities continues to be strengthened in order to bring a historical atmosphere to the areas surrounding cultural tourism destinations.
“The presence of well-maintained historical sites provides a very strong knowledge background for tourists when they visit this region,” said Barlin.
In addition to physical management of heritage sites, the local administration is also actively encouraging the registration of various intangible cultural heritage works at the national level. Digitalization support and regular exhibitions are also being prepared at the city museum to introduce hundreds of old artifact collections to visitors.
“The integration of heritage sites, museums, and annual arts festivals has proven capable of reviving public pride in the richness of their local culture,” he said.
The city administration has allocated ongoing development programs for local artists and cultural figures so that the ecosystem for advancing local traditions can grow independently. He said this comprehensive effort to preserve historical values could boost tourism appeal while also driving the local economy.
