RRI.CO.ID, Medan - Malaysian Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah bin Mohd Nasir has praised North Sumatra’s economic potential and strategic location as pivotal drivers for expanding cross-border trade, logistics, and tourism under the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) framework.
Speaking alongside Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto and North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution after the 32nd IMT-GT Ministerial Meeting in Medan on Thursday, September 10, 2026, Minister Akmal pointed to high connectivity, evidenced by nearly 60 weekly direct flights between Malaysia and Medan, as a foundation for deeper market integration.
During the forum, Bobby Nasution, acting as Chair of the IMT-GT Chief Ministers' and Governors' Forum (CMGF), pitched key regional development projects to member states. These included the 1,934-hectare Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone (SEZ), the 386.72-hectare Toba Caldera Resort, the 2,445-hectare North Sumatra Strategic Industrial Area (KISS), and integrated MICE and smart city developments in Deli Serdang, alongside inter-provincial corridors in Aceh, Riau, Riau Islands, Jambi, and Lampung.
The forum issued five core recommendations, focusing on resource mobilization across IMT-GT economic corridors to advance the sub-region’s Vision 2036 targets. Economic ministers and regional leaders emphasized that strengthening port-to-rail logistics and sub-regional investment corridors will unlock sustainable economic growth across Sumatra, Malaysia, and Thailand.
"This is my first time meeting Governor Bobby Nasution, and I see immense potential, strong commitment, and clear economic opportunities for North Sumatra, high flight connectivity, with around 60 flights per week between Malaysia and Medan, reflects the strength of our business, economic, and community ties. By developing multimodal logistics schemes similar to Malaysia's Penang Port rail connections, we can unlock much broader trade across the IMT-GT sub-region," Akmal Nasrullah bin Mohd Nasir said in Medan on Thursday, September 10, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
North Sumatra Governor and Chair of the IMT-GT CMGF Bobby Nasution outlined the region's top investment offerings and strategic recommendations.
"We offered major strategic projects, including the 1,934-hectare Sei Mangkei SEZ, Toba Caldera Resort, and the North Sumatra Strategic Industrial Area, the CMGF submitted five recommendations, chief among them encouraging resource mobilization along IMT-GT economic corridors, positioning provincial and state governments as primary drivers of connectivity and sustainable economic growth," Bobby Nasution explained. ***
