RRI.CO.ID, Samarinda - East Kalimantan’s film ecosystem has gained a new platform to nurture promising young talent. Through the 2026 Weekend Film Festival, the East Kalimantan Tourism Agency has created a space for collaboration and networking among independent filmmakers and local film communities, with the aim of helping them enter the commercial film industry.
Head of the East Kalimantan Tourism Agency, Muhammad Faisal, said the 2026 Weekend Film Festival is being held from August 27 to 29, 2026 in Temindung Creative Hub Samarinda. The event carries the theme, Celebrating Stories, Connecting Cinema, underscoring that films are not merely works that end once they have been produced and screened.
“Film is a story about people, about regions, about experiences, about identity, and about the way we see life,” said Faisal in Samarinda on Friday, August 28, 2026.
He said East Kalimantan has a wealth of stories worthy of being brought to the big screen, ranging from community life, cultural richness, and environmental preservation to the region’s evolving social dynamics.
The East Kalimantan Provincial Administration welcomed the festival as a platform for collaboration. The event brings together filmmakers, communities, audiences, academics, government representatives, and various stakeholders in a shared creative space.
Faisal explained that the event goes beyond competition and appreciation of cinematic works. The festival deliberately provides space for discussions, non-competition film screenings, community development, and network expansion to encourage cross-sector collaboration.
He stressed that building a healthy film ecosystem cannot be carried out by a single party alone. He continued that strong synergy is needed among the administration, communities, creative-industry players, educational institutions, businesses, the media, and the public as audiences.
“This festival is expected to become a space for East Kalimantan’s film talent to grow. In addition to producing quality works, the event has the potential to strengthen networks, create opportunities for collaboration, and expand the role of the regional creative economy,” said Faisal, as quoted by Antara.
He expressed his appreciation to all filmmakers and participants who took part and competed in the event. Faisal also encouraged local creative practitioners to remain consistent in producing work and to be confident in highlighting the wisdom and stories of their own regions.
“Keep creating, keep telling stories, and do not be afraid to bring forward stories from our own places. Sometimes, the stories closest to us carry the deepest meaning when shared with the world,” said Faisal. ***
