Bojonegoro’s Kedung Lantung Geosite Blends Science and Heritage

RRI.CO.ID, Bojonegoro - Bojonegoro Regency in East Java has a geological treasure in the form of Geosite (G-05) Kedung Lantung in Nglantung hamlet, Drenges Village, Sugihwaras Subdistrict, which forms an important part of its natural heritage. The site is known as a natural petroleum seepage point that emerges along the Borik River and is one of the flagship geosites within the Bojonegoro Geopark area.
Geosite Kedung Lantung is about 30 kilometers from the center of Bojonegoro City, or roughly a one-and-a-half-hour drive. After passing a winding road, visitors still need to walk to reach the site. The area remains lush and is equipped with information boards explaining its history and geological education trail.
Geologically, the area lies within the Kendeng Zone, which was formed through deep-sea sedimentation. Tectonic activity in the past created fractures in the rocks, forming pathways for petroleum to rise from the subsurface reservoir and flow toward the river.
Petroleum naturally seeps to the surface because it is lighter in density than water. The phenomenon can be seen directly at Kedung Lantung through a thin oil layer that reflects light and forms a rainbow-like gradient.
Beyond its scientific value, the petroleum seepage also carries cultural significance. Local residents have long used the seepage oil as a traditional lighting material known as Lintung.
The uniqueness of Geosite Kedung Lantung also adds to Bojonegoro’s geological richness alongside Geosite Kayangan Api, which is about 35 kilometers away. While Kedung Lantung features liquid petroleum seepage, Kayangan Api is known for natural gas seepage that burns on the ground surface.
In addition to geological tourism, the Drenges Village area also has agricultural potential that supports the local economy. The soil structure and climate make corn and cassava the leading commodities.
A member of the Kedung Lantung tourism awareness group (Pokdarwis), Nabila, said the crops are processed into distinctive village products.
“Because most of the crops here are corn and cassava, Marning (made from corn) and Balung Kuwuk (made from cassava) are processed into original products from Drenges Village,” said Nabila on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, as quoted by infopublik.id.
The existence of Geosite Kedung Lantung shows that geological wealth holds not only scientific value, but also history, culture, and economic potential for local communities. Preserving the area is expected to strengthen educational tourism development while safeguarding Bojonegoro’s natural heritage for future generations. ***
