Probolinggo Revives Grape City Identity via Agrotourism Push

RRI.CO.ID, Probolinggo - The Probolinggo City Administration in East Java is accelerating the optimization of municipal land assets to revive Probolinggo’s historic moniker as the Grape City. Through this initiative, local authorities are committed to restoring a once-faded regional identity while advancing community economic self-reliance and agrotourism anchored in local commodities.

The effort was marked by a harvest of several grape varieties by Probolinggo Mayor, Aminuddin, at the site of the City’s Food Security, Agriculture and Fisheries Agency (DKPPP). The harvested varieties include Jupiter as well as Lorano, which is characterized by its large fruit size, crisp texture, and distinctive flavor.

“These grapes are not just a crop; they are part of Probolinggo City’s identity. We want to restore the grape as one of the city’s icons. That is why our land assets must become productive again, serving as centers for learning and research, while also producing superior, high-quality grape varieties,” said Aminuddin on Tuesday, 1 August 2026.

He added that developing premium varieties is a key step in re-establishing Probolinggo as a region known for grape production. The push is not limited to boosting output; it is also intended to open new economic opportunities for residents.

“We want to rebuild Probolinggo’s identity as a grape-producing city. In the past, people knew Probolinggo for its grapes. Now we must bring that back through innovation and better cultivation practices. We hope this will lead to large-scale harvests and become a new economic strength for the community,” he said, as quoted by infopublik.id.

The mayor also encouraged the use of available land, including limited spaces around homes, for productive agricultural activities. Such measures are seen as supporting food self-sufficiency while providing households with additional income.

Probolinggo Deputy Mayor, Ina Dwi Lestari, who joined the harvest, assessed the successful cultivation at the DKPPP site as a positive step toward reviving the commodity. She noted that the vineyard holds not only production value but also potential as an educational and agrotourism site.

“Thank God, today we can see and directly harvest grapes cultivated here. We want the public to see that grapes can grow well in Probolinggo City and that their potential for development is very significant,” she said.

Ina emphasized that grape development must be comprehensive, spanning variety selection, cultivation techniques, maintenance, and post-harvest utilization. This holistic approach is essential to deliver tangible economic benefits.

“We want the grape to once again become Probolinggo City’s icon. Of course, it is not enough just to plant, there must be innovation, variety development, proper care, and a clear path for the harvest to benefit the community economically. If this can be developed together, I am optimistic that Probolinggo grapes will become even more widely known,” she said. ***
