RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Bank Indonesia (BI) has strengthened its expertise in currency security by completing the Currency Academy, an advanced training program focusing on global cash trends, security technology, and innovation.
The program, delivered in collaboration with Swiss technology firm SICPA and its partners, reinforces BI’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the rupiah amid rapid changes in the global financial landscape. It also aims to ensure currency resilience while supporting Indonesia’s social and economic stability.
Participants from BI’s Currency Management Department received comprehensive insights across the entire cash cycle, ranging from paper substrate production and security inks to printing technology, circulation, and cash usage in modern economies. The training included innovations in paper and substrate technology by Landqart, security ink technology and forensic analysis through SICPA workshops and laboratory visits, as well as printing technology advancements from Koenig & Bauer Banknote Solutions.
The academy also provided hands-on understanding of how banknotes are produced and secured, including the rupiah, which is recognized as one of the world’s most secure currencies. The 2022 rupiah series was previously awarded “Best New Series” by the International Association of Currency Affairs (IACA).
Discussions during the program highlighted the adoption of secure cash systems, acceleration of technological transformation, and sustainability through research and development. Participants also explored the future role of cash, with advanced security features such as security threads and next-generation printing technologies expected to play a key role in future-oriented economies like Indonesia.
“The Currency Academy strengthens our ability to safeguard the integrity of the rupiah by deepening our understanding of global cash trends, security technologies, and sustainable practices,” said Muhammad Anwar Bashori, Executive Director and Head of BI’s Currency Management Department. “This initiative reflects our commitment to innovation and collaboration to ensure Indonesia’s currency remains secure, trusted, and future-ready.”
David Burke, Regional Managing Director Asia Pacific at SICPA SA and President Director of PT SICPA-Peruri Securink, said the company was proud to support Bank Indonesia through the program. “Our goal is to help central banks adopt cutting-edge solutions that enhance currency security, operational efficiency, and national sovereignty,” he said.
The Currency Academy is a collaborative initiative between Bank Indonesia and SICPA, designed to strengthen capacity building, technology transfer, and innovation through public-private partnerships, while promoting cost efficiency, sustainability, and positive economic and social impact.
