KBRN, Semarang: In the world of Javanese comedy, Basiyo remains a superstar, even though he passed away more than 40 years ago.

Basiyo was a legendary comedian from Yogyakarta, celebrated for his distinctive style known as Dagelan Mataram. He performed exclusively in Javanese, making his humor deeply rooted in local culture and accessible to audiences across Central Java, Yogyakarta, and East Java.

Fans affectionately called him “The Jokefather,” a playful twist on Mario Puzo’s novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s film The Godfather.

His rise to fame began in the 1940s through radio broadcasts on the state-owned radio station RRI Yogyakarta. This medium required mastery of dialogue and voice acting to sustain humor without visual aids.

Later, he appeared on state-run television TVRI and released numerous cassette recordings, which became widely popular. His skits were frequently aired on private radio stations, and his cassettes were sold in record stores across Java.

Remarkably, Basiyo’s jokes even reached audiences in Suriname, home to a large Javanese diaspora.

Basiyo’s comedy cassettes remained available in music stores until the 2010s, often displayed in the regional arts section.

His enduring appeal carried into the digital era, beginning around 2010, when recordings of his routines were uploaded to YouTube. At least 50 of his performances are now available online, introducing him to new generations of listeners.

One of his most popular routines is Basiyo Mbecak (“Basiyo Pedicab Driver”).

The plot is simple: Basiyo, playing a pedicab driver, takes two passengers to a wedding reception. Along the way, a lively conversation escalates into an argument, which is eventually resolved by the village head.

From this straightforward storyline, Basiyo showcased his mastery as a comedian, capturing the persona, mannerisms, and socioeconomic realities of pedicab drivers with remarkable authenticity.

The routine has been viewed more than 500,000 times on YouTube, effectively “rebranding” Basiyo as a contemporary star. His name remains deeply ingrained in the collective memory of Yogyakarta and surrounding regions, particularly among audiences aged 50 and above.

Basiyo’s comedy was characterized by spontaneity, simplicity, and depictions of everyday life, often accompanied by traditional Javanese gamelan music.

His style inspired many fellow comedians, including Darsono, Harjo Gepeng, and Ngabdul, though Basiyo became the most iconic figure, especially through cassette recordings.

From radio to cassettes and now digital platforms, Basiyo’s jokes continue to resonate. Uploading his recordings and those of other Dagelan Mataram comedians on YouTube has become a way to commemorate and preserve this unique form of Javanese comedy for future generations.
