RRI.CO.ID, Banyuwangi - Banyuwangi, East Java, continued its push to strengthen its reputation as a sports tourism destination as hundreds of cyclists from five countries gathered for the inaugural Nggravel Glenmore, an event that combined off-road racing with exploration of one of the province's emerging tourism areas.
Held on Sunday, October 4, 2026, on the slopes of Mount Raung in Glenmore Subdistrict, the event attracted participants from Australia, the Netherlands, Singapore, Switzerland, and Indonesia. The cycling challenge was organized by Mainsepeda in collaboration with the Banyuwangi Regency Administration.
Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani said Glenmore offers a unique combination of natural scenery and agricultural potential that makes it suitable for sports tourism development. “Glenmore has strong tourism potential. Located on the slopes of Mount Raung, it offers fresh air and beautiful landscapes,” Ipuk said, as quoted by Antara.

She added that the area is also known for producing export-quality cocoa and other commodities, including sugarcane, rubber, and coffee.
Ipuk said the event serves not only as a sporting competition but also as an opportunity to introduce visitors to Banyuwangi’s tourism attractions and local products. “Thank you to Mr. Azrul and Mainsepeda for consistently organizing cycling events in Banyuwangi. We hope this event injects new energy into sports tourism in the regency,” she said.
Founder of Mainsepeda, Azrul Ananda, explained that the Nggravel Glenmore course was designed to challenge participants with a variety of terrain conditions. The opening four kilometers consisted of paved roads before riders entered gravel sections featuring different surface characteristics.

“There are sections where riders can easily exceed 40 kilometers per hour, while other parts feature rock gardens that shake the entire body, as well as sandy stretches that require full concentration,” he explained.
One participant from Yogyakarta, Tika, said she was excited to experience the Glenmore route despite having limited gravel-riding experience. “My goal is not only to finish the race but also to enjoy exercising while exploring a new destination,” she said.
Nggravel Glenmore featured three categories: a competitive 100-kilometer gravel race, a competitive 100-kilometer mountain bike race, and an 80-kilometer non-competitive ride. All categories started and finished at the Glenmore Sugar Industry (IGG) complex.
The event reflects Banyuwangi’s continued effort to combine outdoor recreation, local tourism, and community-based economic promotion through sports-driven activities. ***
