RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Simalungun Museum serves as a center of Batak cultural preservation in Pematang Siantar, standing proudly as one of North Sumatra's oldest cultural institutions. Located in a region rich with tradition, this museum acts as a crucial meeting point for history, ancestral customs, and indigenous local wisdom.
The origins of the museum trace back to a historic gathering known as the Harungguan meeting on January 14, 1937. During this meeting, seven Simalungun kings, district heads, and community leaders united with a shared vision to safeguard their unique heritage.
Construction of the building began in April 1939 and concluded by December of the same year, initially functioning under the name Rumah Pusaka Simalungun. On April 30, 1940, the facility was officially inaugurated through a traditional ceremony, symbolizing unity and cultural pride for the local people.
To ensure long-term sustainability, the Simalungun Museum Foundation was officially established on September 27, 1954, under notary deed number 13. Owned and managed independently by this foundation, the institution continues to serve as an active general museum despite currently lacking formal standardization.
Visitors can explore the museum daily starting at 07.00 local time, with admission fees set at Rp100,000 for regular days and Rp300,000 on public holidays. These visiting hours provide ample opportunity for students, researchers, and tourists to immerse themselves in authentic Batak Simalungun artifacts and traditional architectural elements.
The museum's core mission centers on preserving, maintaining, and sharing the cultural values of Simalungun with a broad public audience. Through its exhibits, the institution strengthens community identity and serves as an open, inclusive educational space for younger generations.
Ultimately, visiting the Simalungun Museum offers a deeply enriching experience that connects travelers to the historical roots of North Sumatra. Every corner of the museum invites visitors to appreciate the enduring customs and communal wisdom that remain relevant today.
