RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Kereta Api Kota Sawahlunto Museum introduces the vital role of the railway in supporting the coal industry in West Sumatra. Located in the historic town of Sawahlunto, it stands as a testament to the colonial-era transportation network that once fueled the regional economy.
Occupying a colonial-era railway station built by the Dutch in 1902, the site originally served as the main hub for transporting coal. Operations thrived from the early 19th century until declining coal production eventually led to the official closure of train services in 2003.
Recognizing the historical significance of the site, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) and the local government transformed the station into a museum. It was officially inaugurated on December 17, 2005, by the Former Indonesian Vice President, Jusuf Kalla.
Classified as a specialized Type B museum officially registered under NPNM 13.73.K.05.0114, the museum functions as a center for preservation and education. It offers visitors immersive visual documentation and historical narratives detailing Sumatra's rich railway heritage.
Owned by the Sawahlunto City Government, the museum is professionally managed by the local Department of Cultural Heritage and Museums. This management ensures the site remains a sustainable educational destination and a cornerstone of local tourism.
Although a comprehensive national collection list is still pending documentation, the museum effectively communicates history through its authentic architecture and educational exhibits. Its core vision is to vividly portray the historical railway activities across Sumatra through ongoing research and cultural preservation.
Ultimately, this historical landmark reinforces Sawahlunto's identity as a mining heritage city and a world heritage site. It continues to inspire public awareness regarding the vital connection between industrial history and national cultural preservation.
