Tangerang Station: Commuter Gateway in Banten to Jakarta's West Regions

RRI.CO.ID, Tangerang – Tangerang Station is a railway station in Tangerang, Banten; west of Jakarta and part of the wider Greater Jakarta metropolitan area. Today, it primarily serves daily commuters traveling between Tangerang and Jakarta through the Tangerang Line (Brown Line) of the KRL Commuter Line system.

The station has its origins in the Dutch colonial railway era, when the state railway company Staatsspoorwegen (SS) developed a branch line connecting Duri in Batavia, now Jakarta, with Tangerang. The 19-kilometer Duri–Tangerang railway was officially opened on January 2, 1899, and Tangerang Station was opened at the same time.

The railway originally served more than passenger travel, as Tangerang was an agricultural and commercial area supplying products to Batavia, the old name of Jakarta. The station's historic importance has continued into the modern era, with its main building originating from the SS period and recognized as a cultural heritage building.

Today, Tangerang Station is the western terminus of the Tangerang Line, operated by KAI Commuter, subsidiary of state-owned Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI). The line runs eastward through stations including Tanah Tinggi, Batuceper, Poris, Kalideres, and Pesing before reaching Duri, where passengers can connect with other commuter services serving Jakarta and surrounding areas.

Technically, the station is a ground-level railway facility with four operational tracks, while an adjacent depot is used for storing electric commuter train sets. The line is electrified, allowing it to be served by electric multiple-unit commuter trains rather than conventional locomotive-hauled passenger trains.

For passengers, Tangerang station provides the basic facilities expected at a major commuter station, including ticketing and electronic access gates, passenger waiting areas, platforms, and supporting passenger services. Its location is particularly useful for visitors exploring central Tangerang because the station is close to several commercial and historic areas, such as Tangerang Old Market (Pasar Lama Tangerang), a historic market and Chinatown area.

For travelers coming from Jakarta, the simplest railway connection is to take the Tangerang Line from Duri Station and remain on the commuter network until the line's western terminus. Passengers arriving at Tangerang Station can continue their journey using the city's bus transit system, Trans Tangerang Ayo, with two corridors serving destinations across the city.
