RRI.CO.ID, Wamena - Wamena in Jayawijaya Regency, Highland Papua, holds immense potential to develop into a world-class cultural and agro-tourism destination, driven by ancestral traditions, ancient heritage, and signature local commodities.
The assessment was highlighted by Deputy Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Puspa during a field visit across Jayawijaya Regency on Thursday, August 6, 2026. The itinerary began in Kumugima Tourism Village, where international travelers experience traditional bakar batu (stone-burning) cooking rituals, indigenous dance performances, and preserved honai traditional houses.
She subsequently visited Aikima Village to inspect a 300-year-old mummy, the preserved remains of Chief Wirafak Elosak, which continues to draw international visitors, including travelers combining trips between Raja Ampat and the Baliem Valley Cultural Festival.
The vice minister also inspected local noken weaving workshops alongside agro-tourism assets, including Kumugima pineapple plantations and renown Wamena coffee, aiming to integrate cultural and agricultural experiences to extend tourist stay durations.
Tourism Ministry leadership and regional executives affirmed that collaborative packaging of local heritage and agricultural assets is vital for sustainable community prosperity. Ni Luh Puspa highlighted the strategic value of Wamena’s indigenous assets.
"This is my first time visiting Wamena, and I am thrilled to observe its extraordinary tourism potential firsthand," she said in Jayawijaya on Thursday, August 6, 2026, as quoted on the ministry's official website.
"When building tourism here, we are drawing from indigenous strength, ancient heritage, and creative local products. Wamena possesses strong cultural appeal capable of extending tourist length of stay, especially as visitors pair their journeys from Raja Ampat with the Baliem Valley Cultural Festival," she added.
Ni Luh Puspa added that the Tourism Ministry still have homework to do alongside the regional administration to further develop and package these attractions, ensuring tourism growth directly delivers economic welfare through cultural and agricultural integration. ***
