RRI.CO.ID, Garut - The shores of Santolo Beach in Cikelet Subdistrict, Garut, West Java, were alive with color and sound on Sunday, July 5, 2026, as the traditional Tasyakur Nelayan (Fisherman’s Thanksgiving) festival took center stage, drawing massive crowds of locals and tourists alike.
The annual maritime celebration featured a vibrant array of events, combining traditional cultural showcases with a highly competitive decorated boat parade across the water. The festival's spiritual centerpiece was the sacred larung sajen ritual, a symbolic offering cast into the open sea as an expression of gratitude for the ocean's bounty.
Capitalizing on the large gathering, the event also functioned as a community hub, offering essential free public services including healthcare checkups, population administration by the Population and Civil Registry Agency (Disdukcapil), and Health Care and Social Security Agency (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan). The day-long festivities concluded with mass prayers, donations to orphans, and a grand wayang golek (wooden puppet) performance by the renowned Giriharja 3 Putra art troupe.
In the wake of the festival's success, the Garut Tourism and Culture Agency (Disparbud) announced plans to formally institutionalize the event into a sustainable tourism magnet aimed at fueling the local economy.
"This is becoming one of the tourism agendas, so that tourism in Garut Regency will be seen as a tourist attraction," Head of Garut Disparbud Beni Yoga Gunasantika said in Garut on Monday, June 6, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Beni noted that while Garut is well-known for its diverse natural and cultural destinations, the southern coastal traditions hold a distinct allure that the government fully intends to scale up.
"Next year, we plan to make this event even more festive, certainly with the support of all parties," he added.
Recognizing the maritime sector as the economic backbone for Garut's coastal residents, the local administration pledged to back its cultural push with concrete infrastructure upgrades. Improved accessibility to southern tourist hotspots like Santolo Beach is expected to enhance visitor comfort and streamline local commerce.
"We will discuss with the regent and the Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) Chairman on how to make the infrastructure heading toward Santolo even better in the future," Beni explained.
Amid the economic and tourism push, the government also used the platform to advocate for environmental sustainability, reminding the fishing community that cultural prosperity depends heavily on marine conservation.
"This is an expression of gratitude for all of us, especially the fishermen, because we have been given blessings, livelihood, and so on, so that other people in Santolo in particular can enjoy the sea's yield," Beni concluded. ***
