RRI.CO.ID, West Manggarai - Just a short distance from Manta Point lies one of Komodo’s most intriguing natural wonders, often referred to by visitors as the “magical island.”

Known as Taka Makassar, this destination is not a typical island with soil or trees, but rather an uninhabited crescent-shaped sandbar that appears and disappears with the tides.

Its uniqueness lies in its rhythm with nature: Taka Makassar fully emerges only during low tide, revealing a stretch of pristine sand. At high tide, the sandbar vanishes beneath waist-deep crystal-clear water, leaving behind a tranquil lagoon.

Located in Komodo Subdistrict, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Taka Makassar sits within the Makassar Reef cluster. Accessible only by sea, the journey takes about 45 minutes by speedboat from Labuan Bajo Harbor.

Due to shallow waters and sensitive coral reefs, larger phinisi vessels and main speedboats cannot dock directly at the sandbar. Instead, they anchor offshore, and visitors are transferred by dinghy or small boats to reach the sandy shore.

Though its land area is smaller than a football field, Taka Makassar offers a wealth of experiences. Landscape and drone photography are especially popular, with striking visuals created by the contrast of white sand tinged with pink coral fragments, turquoise shallows, and deep blue waters further out.

For those seeking relaxation, the calm, shallow waters are ideal for swimming or snorkeling, safe for both children and adults. The sandbar feels like a natural infinity pool, with gentle waves and a serene atmosphere. Visitors can stroll along the curved shoreline, enjoying the vast ocean views in every direction.

It is important to note that Taka Makassar offers no shade or vegetation. Travelers are strongly advised to bring sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and sufficient drinking water, as the sun can be intense in the middle of the sea.
