RRI.CO.ID, Mataram - The Mount Rinjani National Park Agency (BTNGR) in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) has issued an official warning urging tourists and hikers to thoroughly prepare for freezing mountain temperatures before embarking on any climbing expeditions. The advisory comes as weather patterns across the volcanic peaks shift drastically, demanding heightened caution from outdoor enthusiasts.
Mountaineers are explicitly cautioned not to let clear, warm daytime skies cloud their judgment, as temperatures within the national park can plummet rapidly once night falls.
"Tourists and climbers need thorough preparation because the weather is currently colder. A safe climb begins with thorough preparation. Let's enjoy the beauty of Rinjani while prioritizing safety," said Budy Kurniawan, Head of BTNGR NTB, in a written address from Mataram on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) indicates that the freezing temperatures felt from late evening through early morning over the past few days signal that the West Nusa Tenggara region has officially entered the dry season.
During this dry period, atmospheric humidity drops significantly. The lack of moisture causes mountain temperatures to dive sharply during nocturnal and early morning hours.
National park officials warned that these severe microclimate shifts pose substantial physiological threats to unprepared visitors. Extreme cold at high altitudes drastically increases the risk of hypothermia, particularly when hikers are resting or exposed to open, wind-swept ridges.
To ensure a safe alpine experience, the national park management has outlined several critical safety measures for all prospective climbers before they enter the trails. Regarding thermal gear, climbers must pack adequate cold-weather clothing and heavy jackets specifically designed for mountain environments.
For insulated bedding, the use of high-quality sleeping bags rated for freezing high-altitude temperatures is highly recommended. In terms of physical fitness, hikers are strongly urged to maintain peak physical conditioning and stay properly hydrated throughout the grueling trek.
Finally, comprehensive gear inspections are required, meaning all personal and group camping equipment must be thoroughly checked to ensure everything is complete and in optimal working condition.
The Mount Rinjani National Park Center confirmed it will continue to intensify its safety socialization campaigns targeting tourists, local guides, and relevant stakeholders. By raising grassroots awareness, authorities aim to uphold rigorous safety and security standards across one of Indonesia’s most popular volcanic destinations. ***
