RRI.CO.ID, Malang - The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Agency (BBTNBTS) in East Java has announced a total temporary closure of all tourism activities within the Mount Bromo area to honor the upcoming sacred Yadnya Kasada ritual. The suspension of commercial tourism is designed to give the indigenous Tengger community complete privacy and space to carry out their ancient ancestral ceremonies without external disruption.

The absolute closure will take effect from midnight on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 00.00 local time, and will run through Tuesday, June 2, 2026, until 23.59 local time. During this four-day window, the iconic 2,329-meter volcano will be strictly off-limits to recreational visitors, opening its gates exclusively to local residents participating in the spiritual pilgrimage, Antara reported.

The decision is a direct institutional response to an official circular issued by the Chairman of the Tengger Region Council of Shaman Priests (Paruman Dukun Pandita). In coordination with tribal authorities, the National Park Management formalized the directive by publishing a standalone public notice regarding the temporary shutdown of the peak and its surrounding natural attractions.

The closure on the final day, June 2, will serve a vital dual purpose. It has been deliberately set aside to conduct a sweeping, localized ecological cleanup of the park immediately following the conclusion of the mass ritual. Only official park rangers, staff, and community volunteers tasked with the environmental restoration effort will be granted field access during those final hours.

Park officials confirmed that regular tourism operations and public access will officially resume on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at 01.00 local time. Management is calling on all prospective travelers, travel agencies, and local hospitality operators to respect the ancestral traditions of the land and strictly abide by the temporary restriction.

The temporary economic pause comes on the heels of a massive tourism boom for the region. Between January and May 2016, the Mount Bromo volcanic complex successfully attracted a whopping 344,039 visitors, consisting of 332,432 domestic holidaymakers and 11,607 international travelers, underscoring its status as a premier global destination that requires careful cultural balancing.

BBTNBTS Head Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha detailed the legal and structural steps taken by the government to ensure the cultural sanctity of the reserve is maintained:

"The closure of the Bromo area will be in effect from 12.00 a.m. local time on May 30, 2026, to 11.59 p.m. local time on June 2, 2026, for the Kasada ritual. The area will only be open to officials and members of the public who have a vested interest in participating in the cleanup," Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha said on Sunday, May 24, 2026. ***
