RRI.CO.ID, Yogyakarta - For travelers exploring the southern coast of Yogyakarta, the beaches of Gunungkidul offer an endless array of coastal landscapes, each possessing its own unique charm. Tucked away just east of the well-known Ngrenehan Beach lies Torohudan Beach, a secluded coastal strip that remains one of the region's best-kept secrets for those seeking an untouched, crowd-free escape.

Though its shoreline measures a modest 20 meters in width, what Torohudan lacks in size it more than makes up for in dramatic scenery. The beach is characterized by its powdery white sand, framed heavily by towering limestone cliffs that absorb the relentless crash of the southern ocean waves.

The true luxury of Torohudan Beach is its absolute tranquility. Unlike the more commercialized hubs along the coastline, it remains largely uncrowded, offering an authentic private beach atmosphere even during holiday weekends.

Dilla, a traveler visiting from Magetan, East Java, stumbled upon the hidden gem after spending the night at neighboring Baron Beach with her tour group.

"Our group has been here since yesterday, we stayed overnight at Baron Beach, and today we found Torohudan Beach, which is so quiet it feels like our own because there aren't many visitors. The sand is beautiful and white, the nature is pristine, and it's not too crowded," Dilla shared on Sunday, May 17, 2026.

This lack of dense crowds means the local micro-economy operates at a slower, gentler pace. Kintun, a local MSME vendor who has been selling snacks and refreshments at the beach since 2019, noted that while foot traffic is light, the weekend and holiday visitors keep her business going.

"This beach is not too crowded with visitors; I sell things here, and if it's a holiday, Alhamdulillah, people buy my goods," she remarked on Sunday afternoon.

Located in Kanigoro Village, Saptosari Subdistrict, Gunungkidul Regency, Torohudan Beach is approximately 55 to 60 kilometers from the center of Yogyakarta. Depending on traffic, the journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by car or motorcycle.

Because it is bundled into the same administrative route as Ngrenehan Beach, access is highly affordable. Visitors pay a standard entry ticket of just IDR 8,000 (USD 0.45) per person, with a minor vehicle parking fee of IDR 3,000.

Because the beach preserves its raw, natural state, the final approach requires careful preparation, starting with checking the weather forecast before setting out. The final access path consists of rocky, relatively steep terrain, making it highly recommended to visit during clear, dry weather to avoid dealing with muddy, hazardous trails.

Adventurers are also advised to wear practical footwear, such as a solid pair of walking shoes or high-traction sandals, which will make navigating the uneven and potentially slippery rocky descent to the shore significantly safer.

Travelers must inspect their vehicles to ensure that their motorcycles or cars are in peak mechanical condition, with special attention paid to the brakes and tires ,as the driving terrain leading into the Saptosari valleys is notably challenging.

For those willing to make the trek, Torohudan Beach offers a rare, undisturbed sensory retreat where the steady hum of the ocean and the shadows of the cliffs provide the perfect antidote to urban fatigue. (Naura Sofia/EN)
