RRI.CO.ID, Central Bangka - Located in Nibung Village, the Kulong Biru (Blue Lake) has evolved from a former tin mining site into one of the most stunning tourist magnets in Bangka Belitung. Situated approximately 60 kilometers from Depati Amir Airport, this destination offers a surreal landscape of turquoise waters and white sandy peaks that continue to draw visitors from across the country.

Unlike volcanic craters, the air at Kulong Biru remains fresh and free from sulfurous odors, making it a comfortable retreat for families. "I come here quite often, but I never get bored. Usually, I'm with my family, just my husband and children," said Santi, a traveler from Sungailiat, on Sunday, May 10, 2026.

The lake's primary appeal lies in its striking visual contrast. The water, which ranges from a deep blue to a vibrant tosca, changes hue depending on the air temperature and sunlight intensity. These crystal-clear waters are surrounded by mounds of white sand that have been naturally sculpted into miniature hills over time.

To enhance the visitor experience, the site features pedestrian pathways that are well-maintained for those who wish to stroll around the perimeter of the lake. Additionally, the area is equipped with wooden bridges that act as connected structures, allowing travelers to walk over the water for a more immersive perspective of the landscape.

Visitors can also take advantage of numerous photographic hotspots, providing Instagrammable angles that have quickly made the lake a favorite destination for social media enthusiasts.

Kulong Biru's unique beauty has not gone unnoticed. It was notably nominated as the Most Popular Unique Destination at the 2019 Anugerah Pesona Indonesia (API) awards. Today, it stands as a cornerstone of Central Bangka's tourism industry, supported by essential facilities including a food court (pujasera), spacious parking areas, and souvenir shops.

While the scenery remains a major draw, some visitors have called for continued upkeep. "Every photo taken in the Kulong Biru area never disappoints. It's beautiful and very Instagrammable. I'd just suggest that the facilities for visitors be given more attention," noted another visitor, Luna.

Accessible within a 60-minute drive from Pangkalpinang, Kulong Biru serves as a powerful example of how industrial landscapes can be successfully reclaimed and repurposed into valuable ecological and economic assets. (Naura Sofia/EN)
