RRI.CO.ID, Bandung - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) develops smart mechatronics technology addressing healthcare needs for bedrest and bedridden patients. This innovation focuses on an air mattress system supporting long-term patient care and comfort.
A researcher at BRIN's Smart Mechatronics Research Center (PRMC) Bahrudin stated medical differences between bedrest recovery conditions and bedridden immobility cases. “Bedrest is a recovery condition, while bedridden refers to long-term immobility requiring continuous lying," he said on Tuesday, 27 January 2026.
Such conditions risk causing various health complications without adequate technological support systems. Therefore, integrated research designs technologies improving human quality of life beyond mechanical functions.
The biomechatronics research group develops strategic innovations assisting daily human activities and healthcare needs. Intelligent mechatronics integrates mechanical, electronic, and control systems creating adaptive practical solutions.
PRMC also develops supportive care devices including clothing aids, dry bathing, and air mattresses. These air mattresses are designed in one-dimensional and two-dimensional configurations for patient assistance.
Furthermore, the air mattress helps caregivers handle immobile patients while significantly increasing long-term comfort. It supports patients weighing up to ninety kilograms and has obtained patent protection.
The technology operates by adjusting air volume to create space without moving patient bodies. This mechanism allows easier clothing changes and care procedures for permanently bedridden patients.
