KBRN, Jakarta: The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has summoned Meta to clarify allegations of an Instagram user data leak. The issue, widely discussed on social media, has raised public concerns about account security.
Alexander Sabar, Director General of Digital Space Supervision at the Ministry, said Meta had submitted an official statement. He explained that Instagram’s password reset process operates through an internal system and does not grant access to external parties.
“No user passwords can be accessed or obtained by anyone other than the account owner. We also found no indication of misuse of the password reset feature for data retrieval by external parties,” Alexander said in Jakarta on Friday, January 16, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
He added that the Ministry is continuing its investigation to ensure the security of Instagram’s system. The findings will serve as a reference for evaluating and strengthening future cybersecurity policies.
Instagram representatives confirmed that they are conducting a further investigation into the alleged data leak. The probe aims to verify the validity of information circulated in a third-party report.
Alexander emphasized that summoning Meta falls under the Ministry’s authority, as stipulated in Government Regulation No. 71/2019 on the Implementation of Electronic Systems and Transactions.
He said the move reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding digital security and protecting personal data.
The Ministry urged the public to remain calm and avoid being influenced by unverified information. Citizens were also advised to stay vigilant and regularly update the security of their digital accounts. ***
