KBRN, Jakarta: The Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has introduced WoodPlastic, a wood-based bioplastic alternative made entirely from natural sources.

This innovation aims to reduce plastic waste and support the development of a green economy through eco-friendly material solutions.

Prabu Satria Sejati, a researcher at the Center for Biomass and Bioproduct Research under BRIN’s Biological and Environmental Research Organization, presented the innovation at the Indonesia Research and Innovation Expo (InaRI Expo) 2025, held on October 28 at JIEXPO, Jakarta.

He explained that WoodPlastic was developed as part of his doctoral research at the Université de Lorraine in France, as quoted by brin.go.id on Wednesday, October 29, 2025.

WoodPlastic utilizes wood powder or other lignocellulosic materials such as bamboo and rattan, which react with fatty acids without the addition of synthetic thermoplastic polymers. Its translucent, flexible, and hydrophobic properties make it a more environmentally friendly option for industrial packaging.

In terms of mechanical strength, WoodPlastic falls between polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), which are commonly used in industrial plastic packaging. The material can be recycled through re-melting and remolding, helping to reduce waste.

Prabu emphasized that the final product is 100 percent natural and does not rely on food-based sources such as starch, thereby not impacting food security. He added that ongoing research is testing its biodegradability for long-term ecological benefits.

The production process is relatively simple and does not involve chemical solvents, making it more efficient and environmentally friendly.

WoodPlastic’s versatility allows it to be applied across various sectors, including food packaging, textiles, medical products such as patches, and automotive interior components.

International recognition for the research has been secured through French patent number FR2205776, which lists both French and Indonesian inventors.

Prabu noted that a European luxury fashion brand has expressed interest in developing WoodPlastic for use in high-end products, demonstrating its potential in the luxury goods industry.

With this innovation, BRIN is opening opportunities for collaboration with industry partners to accelerate technology downstreaming.

WoodPlastic stands as a tangible example of BRIN’s contribution to delivering sustainable, functional, and future-ready material solutions that support Indonesia’s transition toward a greener industrial landscape. ***
