RRI.CO.ID, Soreang - PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir observes that the competitive landscape of Southeast Asian football is becoming increasingly intense. ASEAN nations are continuously improving their team quality—including through the recruitment of naturalized players and those from various other countries—narrowing the gap in strength between teams competing in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026.

According to him, this development ensures that every match in this inaugural FIFA event in Southeast Asia is fierce and engaging. Clashes between teams such as Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and other ASEAN nations demonstrate that match outcomes in the region are no longer easily predictable.

"The quality of play among Southeast Asian nations is steadily rising. Each team possesses growing strength and an increasingly solid squad composition," he stated after watching a match at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium, Bandung, on Tuesday, September 29th.

The PSSI Chairman cited Malaysia as an example, noting their squad—comprising players from various nations—displays great cohesion. Erick believes that strengthening squads with naturalized players and those with international experience has driven ASEAN nations to become more competitive.

"Consequently, every match is crucial. Teams aiming to advance must fight hard from the very first game and cannot afford to underestimate any opponent," he said.

Erick also emphasized that Indonesia’s chances in the FIFA ASEAN Cup remain alive. However, realizing this potential requires hard work, consistency, and total focus in every match.

He urged the Garuda squad not to become complacent due to previous results, particularly when facing opponents considered weaker on paper. Erick pointed to other matches in the tournament as proof that upsets can happen at any moment.

"Bangladesh must not be underestimated either. Indonesia must keep fighting and play with complete focus," he stated.

Erick also commended the fighting spirit shown by the Indonesian players in their previous match. Despite being reduced to ten men, the Garuda squad continued to battle until the final whistle. For him, that fighting spirit serves as a crucial asset in facing increasingly tight competition in Southeast Asia.
