Pontianak Ready to Host Polytron International Challenge 2026

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Pontianak is preparing to welcome the world of badminton as the Polytron Pontianak International Challenge 2026 takes place from August 25–30 at the Ahmad Yani Integrated Sports Hall in West Kalimantan.

The tournament is a collaboration between the central executive board of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) and its West Kalimantan provincial chapter, and is part of the official Badminton World Federation (BWF) International Challenge calendar, offering a total prize purse of USD 20,000.

Organizing Committee Chair Yuni Kartika said the event reflects PBSI’s commitment to bringing international competitions to regional centers. “We are proud and grateful that Indonesia has been entrusted to host a BWF‑sanctioned championship," she said.

"Beyond being a stage for athletes to compete, develop skills, and earn world ranking points, we hope this tournament will nurture new talents who can shine on the global badminton stage,” she noted.

Yuni added that the event is expected to deliver wider benefits for the local community by boosting sports development, tourism, and the regional economy, while also promoting Pontianak.

The championship will feature players from 17 countries, including Chinese Taipei, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, South Korea, New Zealand, England, Japan, Slovakia, Singapore, Canada, the United States, France, and Portugal.

Indonesia has the largest contingent, followed by India, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore.

Chair of PBSI's West Kalimantan Chapter, Joko Sularso, emphasized the importance of hosting international tournaments as a milestone for the province.

“The Polytron Pontianak International Challenge 2026 and the Polytron Pontianak Indonesia Masters 2026 are key opportunities for West Kalimantan to showcase its capacity as host of world‑class badminton events," he said.

"The presence of athletes, coaches, officials, and guests from many countries is both an honor and a chance to introduce Pontianak and West Kalimantan to the world,” he added.

Joko expressed hope that both tournaments will run smoothly and successfully, contributing to badminton’s growth while delivering positive impacts for the community and the region. (Diffa Sephiawardhani)
