RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia is positioning itself at the forefront of Southeast Asian football as it prepares to host the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, a new inter-nation tournament under FIFA’s umbrella.
The competition, expected to be the largest football event in the region, is seen as a strategic step to elevate the quality and visibility of Asian teams on the global stage.
Chairman of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir explained that Indonesia is awaiting confirmation from FIFA regarding its role as host, with Hong Kong also considered as a possible co-host.
“We are now waiting to see how FIFA will work with us as the host,” Erick told reporters in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
He noted that FIFA is expanding its portfolio of regional tournaments after the success of the FIFA Arab Cup in the Middle East and Africa.
“The main goal is to raise the level of competition among Asian nations in preparation for future World Cups,” Erick said, adding that the ASEAN Cup represents FIFA’s investment in Southeast Asia’s football development.
The Indonesian government has already expressed full support, with President Prabowo Subianto sending an official letter to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Erick expects an announcement within one to two weeks, which could pave the way for a major football spectacle in September–October 2026. “We will welcome it with great enthusiasm, because it means Indonesia will host a grand football event in the coming months,” he said.
The FIFA ASEAN Cup is not only a milestone for regional football but also an opportunity for Indonesia to strengthen its reputation as a sport tourism destination and showcase its ability to stage international events. ***
