RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia’s convincing 3-0 win over Timor Leste in the AFF Cup 2026 Group A was not only about securing points but also marked the emergence of a new face in the national team.
Tim Geypens, the 21-year-old Bali United player, made his senior debut and earned praise from head coach John Herdman for his energy and potential.
Playing at the Chonburi Stadium, Thailand, on Friday, July 31, Geypens lasted 66 minutes before being replaced by Ragnar Oratmangoen. Herdman acknowledged the youngster’s impact despite limited match rhythm.
“I’m proud of Tim. He had some very good moments, especially in the first half when his energy was full. You could see the quality he brings, and that was impressive,” Herdman said in a post-match press conference, as quoted by Antara.
Geypens became Indonesia’s fourth debutant in the tournament, following Mitchell Baker, Jens Raven, and Brian Fatari, who featured in the earlier 5-1 victory over Cambodia.
His statistics reflected promise: 19 successful passes, one key pass, one interception, one ball recovery, and a shot on target that nearly produced a goal. Herdman noted the challenge of debuting during pre-season. “This was only his second match since April," he added.
The win lifted Indonesia to second place in Group A with six points, overtaking Vietnam, who slipped to third after a goalless draw against Singapore. The Garuda squad now prepares for a crucial home fixture against Vietnam at Pakansari Stadium, Bogor, in West Java, on August 3. ***
