RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia secured an important start to its men's singles campaign at the 2026 China Open after shuttler Jonatan Christie overcame a stern first-round test while Alwi Farhan's early exit offered valuable lessons ahead of next month's BWF World Championships.

Fourth seed Jonatan Christie, better known as Jojo, battled past Japan's Yudai Okimoto 21-17, 6-21, 21-13 in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, adapting to challenging court conditions to keep Indonesia's hopes alive in the BWF World Tour Super 1000 tournament.

He admitted the windy arena and shuttlecock conditions made the match difficult, forcing him to adjust his tactics throughout the contest.

"Thank God I managed to get through an uncomfortable situation. The conditions here are a bit tricky because of the wind and the shuttlecock, so I really had to be smart with my strategy," he said on Wednesday, July 22, in a statement released by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI).

He described Okimoto as a patient and resilient opponent who became more difficult to break down in the second game. Rather than forcing the issue, Christie chose to conserve energy while regaining confidence in his attacking shots before the deciding game.

"In the second game, he became more patient and I fell far behind. I decided to save my energy for the third game. I also used that game to regain the feel of my smashes so I could build momentum later in the decider. Fortunately, it worked well," he added.

Jojo will next face Singapore's Loh Kean Yew, whose attacking style demands extra caution under the current playing conditions. ***
