RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s men’s volleyball team fell short of winning the South East Asia V League (SEA V Cup) 2026, suffering a dramatic defeat to Cambodia in the final of the first leg.

The championship clash ended in a tight 2–3 scoreline on Sunday, July 19, at the Candon City Arena in the Philippines. The loss was surprising, as Indonesia had previously swept Cambodia 3–0 in the group stage. Cambodia, however, rebounded strongly, advancing to the final after eliminating Thailand.

Cambodia seized early momentum, taking the first set 25–23 and edging the second 28–26. Indonesia, coached by Reidal Toiran, fought back with a narrow third-set win and forced a decider after claiming the fourth 25–22. But in the fifth set, Indonesia’s defense faltered, allowing Cambodia to secure victory 15–11.

Assistant coach Nur Widayanto noted Cambodia’s boosted confidence after their semifinal win over Thailand. “Our weak start gave them the mental edge. Their momentum kept growing,” he explained.

He also highlighted technical shortcomings, including poor first-ball reception and ineffective attacks, despite Indonesia entering the tournament as reigning Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Cup champions.

Nur further pointed out defensive lapses: “Their attacks were predictable, often directed to the outside hitter at position four. But our blockers lacked patience and tightness, so their strikes still broke through.”

Elsewhere, Thailand clinched third place by defeating Vietnam 3–1, with set scores of 23–25, 30–28, 25–20, and 28–26.

The prestigious tournament now moves to its second leg in Indonesia, scheduled for July 22–26, 2026. The Indonesian squad will fight to rebound from the painful loss and keep alive their hopes of defending the championship title. (Diffa Sephiawardhani)
