RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian men’s singles shuttler Alwi Farhan progressed to the last 16 of the Japan Open 2026 after defeating Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto in straight games, 21-14, 21-11, in the round of 32.
Quoting BWF official website, the match lasted 37 minutes at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
The opening game saw both players locked in a tight battle, with the score tied at 13-13. But world No. 10 Alwi broke free from Nishimoto’s pressure, reeling off seven consecutive points to close out the game 21-14. His dominance carried into the second game.
Alwi opened with five straight points, added another five to secure the interval, and sealed the match with yet another run of five consecutive points.
Afterward, the 21-year-old expressed his delight at returning to Japan, hoping to create lasting memories during the tournament.
“Of course, I’m happy to be back in Japan. Who wouldn’t be excited to play here? The food and the city (Tokyo) are wonderful, so I hope I can make great memories,” he said.
Despite the convincing win, Alwi admitted he was unsure of what unfolded on Nishimoto’s side of the court, choosing instead to stay focused on his own game.
“Every tournament is a new opportunity for me to learn and understand myself better. I don’t know what Nishimoto was feeling today. I just tried to make the most of what happened on court,” he explained.
In the round of 16, Alwi will face France’s Alex Lanier in their seventh career meeting. The head-to-head record currently favors Lanier, who leads 4-2. Still, Alwi remains unfazed by the challenge.
“Meeting Alex Lanier in the round of 16 won’t be a problem for me. Even though recent encounters have been tough, I believe going through uncomfortable situations makes me stronger,” he said.
Reflecting on his recent success, Alwi emphasized that true greatness goes beyond winning titles.
“We all know I just won in Australia, but being a champion isn’t about winning once or twice; it’s about becoming a true champion. Winning several times doesn’t necessarily make you one,” he remarked. (Diffa Sephiawardhani)
