RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s national football team capped off June’s FIFA Match Day with back-to-back wins over Oman and Mozambique, a run that lifted Garuda four places to 118th in the world rankings.
After a convincing 3-0 triumph against Oman last Friday, Indonesia followed up with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mozambique at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Chairman Erick Thohir praised the team’s resilience in a match that proved tougher than expected.
“The boys played well. We hit the post twice, and Mozambique also hit the post. It was a game of constant exchanges and shifting strategies. I think it was quite a hard match,” he told reporters, as quoted by Antara.
Pre-match predictions had suggested Indonesia would find Mozambique an easier opponent compared to Oman. Yet, despite Mozambique’s lower FIFA ranking, they pushed Indonesia throughout the 90 minutes.
Erick noted this as proof that quality on the pitch cannot be judged solely by world rankings. “Every team has its own strategy and player fitness levels. Anything can happen. Alhamdulillah, today we secured full points,” he said.
The two victories added 1157.14 points to Indonesia’s tally, while Mozambique slipped two places to 103rd after consecutive defeats--4-1 to Oman and 0-1 to Indonesia.
Erick expressed hope that the momentum will carry Indonesia closer to the top 100. “Hopefully we can keep moving toward our target of breaking into the 100s soon,” said the 56-year-old chairman. ***
