RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian men’s singles badminton player Jonatan Christie admitted he struggled with pressure during the 2026 Indonesia Open final, leading to his defeat against Canadian shuttler Victor Lai at Istora Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, Jakarta, on Sunday, June 7.
Playing before a home crowd, Jonatan’s hopes of winning his first Indonesia Open title ended after he lost in straight games, 19-21 and 8-21, in a 39-minute match at the BWF World Tour Super 1000 tournament. “From the start of the match, there was a lot of pressure. The tension was palpable. I don’t think I managed that pressure well on court today,” Jonatan said at a post-match press conference, as quoted by Antara.
He dismissed suggestions that the yellow card he received in the second game was the turning point, insisting the main factor was his inability to handle the pressure of playing in the final.
Jonatan had performed consistently throughout the week, reaching the Indonesia Open final for the first time in his career. But against Victor Lai, who was in peak form, he struggled to find rhythm.
In the opening game, Jonatan fought hard before losing 19-21. Victor grew more confident in the second game, dominating rallies and closing with a decisive 21-8 victory. From the outset, Victor neutralized Jonatan’s attacks, forcing long exchanges and capitalizing on Jonatan’s unforced errors at crucial moments.
The second game proved even tougher, as Victor quickly built a lead and controlled the tempo. Jonatan, trailing 4-8, remained under pressure until conceding the match.
Despite the loss, Jonatan said he would not dwell on disappointment. He plans to take a short break to rest and recharge before preparing for upcoming major tournaments.
“I want to take a break from badminton to relax and refresh my mind, which has been drained by the last three weeks of matches,” he said.
After resting, Jonatan will reorganize his training program with his team ahead of the 2026 World Championships and the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games later this year.
He also noted that men’s singles competition has become more balanced, with emerging players from countries not traditionally seen as badminton powerhouses now producing world-class talent.
“Several countries are developing rapidly and showing significant progress. They may not have been considered important before, but now they have players who are worthy contenders in international tournaments,” Jonatan said.
He pointed to Victor Lai as an example of this shift, praising the Canadian’s composure and discipline in executing his strategy.
“In terms of self-control, he was able to carry out his prepared strategy very well. I think that was the most visible difference in today’s match,” Jonatan said.
Although not a tournament favorite, Victor Lai has proven himself a rising force. He won bronze at the 2025 World Championships after defeating several top-ranked players. His Indonesia Open victory marks the biggest title of his career so far.
For Jonatan, the defeat means his dream of lifting the Indonesia Open trophy will have to wait. ***
