RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s men’s singles shuttler Jonatan Christie has reignited local hopes of a home triumph after booking his place in the final of the BWF World Tour Super 1000 Polytron Indonesia Open 2026.

Playing at Istora Gelora Bung Karno, Central Jakarta, on Saturday, June 6, 2026, Jonatan--fondly known as Jojo--overcame Thailand’s Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul in a three-game battle, 16-21, 21-10, 21-12, lasting 58 minutes.

The victory puts Jonatan just one step away from ending Indonesia’s long drought in men’s singles at the prestigious home tournament. The last time Indonesia celebrated a champion in this category was in 2012, when Simon Santoso lifted the trophy, Antara reported.

Jonatan’s path to the final was far from easy. He struggled in the opening game as Panitchaphon dictated the pace with fast, aggressive play, repeatedly targeting Jonatan’s forehand with sharp cross-court smashes. Despite narrowing the gap to 8-9, Jonatan’s errors allowed the Thai shuttler to close out the first game 21-16.

In the second game, Jonatan adjusted his rhythm, forcing longer rallies and controlling exchanges at the net. From 1-3 down, he surged ahead with five consecutive points to lead 6-3, eventually taking the interval at 11-8. His patience paid off as Panitchaphon’s accuracy faltered, enabling Jonatan to dominate and seal the game 21-10.

Momentum firmly shifted in the decider. Jonatan played with composure, mixing drives and net shots to disrupt Panitchaphon’s tempo. Leading 11-7 at the interval, he extended his advantage with clever variations, including a decisive cross-court drive to the Thai’s backhand that pushed him to 16-11.

Panitchaphon grew increasingly frustrated as Jonatan returned his powerful smashes with ease, before an error on service confirmed the Indonesian’s 21-12 victory.

Jonatan now advances to the final, where he will face Canadian Victor Lai, who stunned sixth seed Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan in another three-game thriller, 21-19, 19-21, 21-19.

With the crowd behind him, Jonatan stands on the brink of delivering Indonesia’s first men’s singles crown at the Indonesia Open in 14 years. ***
