RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s 3-0 victory over Oman not only ended a 38-year winless streak against the Gulf nation but also showcased the national team’s commitment to youth development under head coach John Herdman.

Following the FIFA Matchday win at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium on Friday, June 5, 2026, Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Chairman Erick Thohir praised Herdman for his willingness to trust emerging talents on the international stage.

"To be honest, I respect coach John for having the courage to give opportunities to young players. Previously it was Doni (Tri Pamungkas), and now Matthew Baker was also given a chance to play," Erick told reporters after the match, as quoted by Antara.

Indonesia secured a convincing victory through goals from Justin Hubner, Ole Romeny, and Ragnar Oratmangoen, controlling the game from the outset to record its first win over Oman since the 1988 King's Cup.

Herdman introduced three young players from the bench during the match: Dony Tri Pamungkas (21), Matthew Baker (17), and Mauro Zijlstra (21). Baker's appearance was particularly significant as he became the youngest player ever to feature for Indonesia's senior national team.

Erick said the inclusion of young players in an important international fixture reflected the coach's commitment to developing Indonesia’s next generation of talent.

According to him, providing opportunities for younger players is essential to maintaining the national team's competitiveness over the long term. He added that combining experienced senior players with emerging prospects creates a healthy balance within the Garuda squad.

International match experience, Erick noted, also helps accelerate young players’ development, particularly in decision-making, match awareness, and handling pressure at the highest level.

He expressed hope that more young talents will emerge under Herdman as part of Indonesia’s long-term regeneration process. "Hopefully the regeneration of players will continue from the U-19 level and even younger age groups into the senior national team," Erick hoped.

Looking ahead, Erick wants Indonesia to build on the momentum when they host Mozambique in their second FIFA Matchday fixture on June 9, with a positive result potentially helping improve Indonesia’s FIFA ranking from its current position of 122nd in the world. ***
