RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian national futsal team is setting its sights on European opposition for the upcoming FIFA Matchday in November 2026, as part of its long-term push to raise competitiveness on the global stage.
Head coach Hector Souto confirmed that initial contacts have already been made. “We have reached out to several European national teams. They asked us to wait,” Souto told reporters in Jakarta on Friday, May 29, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
The Spanish tactician stressed that facing European squads would be crucial for Indonesia’s development.
“Matches against European teams are important to improve the quality of our futsal. We are working with the federation to make this happen,” he said, noting that the Indonesian Futsal Federation (FFI) is actively pursuing the plan.
However, Souto acknowledged the logistical challenges. European nations are beginning their World Cup qualification campaigns, which follow a different format from Asia.
“In Asia, qualification usually comes through a single tournament leading to the AFC Futsal Championship. In Europe, they play in league-style groups of four to six teams, with the top two advancing. That makes scheduling more complicated,” he explained.
Indonesia is waiting for the outcome of the European qualification draw before resuming talks. “Once their schedules are confirmed, we will reopen communication,” Souto added.
The national team is currently focused on preparing for the FIFA Futsal World Cup qualifiers in Asia, with FIFA Matchday fixtures, friendly matches, and youth development programs forming part of its broader roadmap.
This ambition reflects Indonesia’s determination to test itself against stronger opponents, ensuring the squad gains valuable experience as it builds toward the world stage. ***
