RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian men’s national badminton team is heading into a decisive Group D encounter against France in the 2026 Thomas Cup, where only a victory will guarantee them top spot in the group.

Head of Performance Development at the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI), Eng Hian, stressed the importance of fielding the most prepared athletes for every stage of the competition.

“I remind every coach to ensure that the athletes selected for each phase are those in the best condition, both physically and mentally,” Eng Hian said in an official statement released Tuesday, April 28, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Indonesia currently sits in Group D alongside France, Thailand, and Algeria. The team has already delivered strong performances, recording a dominant 5-0 win over Algeria and a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Thailand.

Those results mean Indonesia will top the group if they defeat France in their final group-stage match. However, several scenarios remain open.

If Indonesia loses narrowly 2-3 to France while Thailand defeats Algeria 5-0, Indonesia would still finish second in the group and qualify for the quarterfinals.

A heavier defeat, such as 1-4 or 0-5, could see Indonesia eliminated from the tournament due to head-to-head and point differentials, especially after Thailand’s surprise 4-1 victory over fifth-seeded France.

This makes the upcoming Indonesia-France match the most critical fixture in Group D, with qualification and group leadership hanging in the balance.

In a separate development, the Indonesian women’s team is also in a strong position in the Uber Cup.

They have secured convincing wins over Australia (5-0) and Canada (3-2), placing them level with Taiwan at the top of Group C. Their head-to-head meeting will determine the group winner.

Eng Hian praised both squads for their fighting spirit and urged them to maintain composure in high-pressure matches.

“I hope the players continue to compete calmly, confidently, and without pressure. Show a champion’s character in every point, every rally, and every match,” he said.

He added that relaxed and expressive play often leads to better results.

The quarterfinal draw for the Uber Cup will be held on Wednesday, April 29, followed by the Thomas Cup draw on Thursday, April 30.

Group winners will face runners-up from other groups, with regulations preventing teams from the same group meeting again at this stage.

The Indonesian Uber Cup team will face Taiwan at 3 p.m. Jakarta time, followed by the men’s Thomas Cup clash against France at 11 p.m. Jakarta time. ***
