RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The excitement of international GT racing is set to return to Indonesia as the GT World Challenge Asia 2026 heads to the Mandalika Circuit in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, on May 2–3.
This marks the second Indonesian edition of the prestigious series, which will feature FIA-homologated GT3 cars competing across four categories. GT World Challenge Asia follows a similar format to its European counterpart, though with regional adjustments, Antara reported.
The four classes -- Pro-Am, Silver-Am, Silver, and Am -- are determined by driver categorization rather than car specifications, ensuring equal machinery but varied skill combinations.
In Europe, the classes are Pro, Gold, Silver, and Bronze, while GTWC Australia runs Pro-Am, Am, and Trophy (reserved for older GT3 models), and GTWC America features Pro, Pro-Am, and Am.
Indonesia’s presence will be highlighted by Sean Gelael, who will compete in the Silver class for Garage 75, an Indonesian team. His participation adds a strong local dimension to the international grid.
In Mandalika, the Pro-Am class pairs professional drivers, Platinum, Gold, or Silver FIA with amateurs in the Bronze category, with at least one driver required to be from Asia. The Silver-Am class combines a Silver driver with a Bronze driver, excluding Platinum and Gold, and also requires one Asian competitor.
The Silver class is reserved for two Silver-rated drivers, both of whom must come from Asia. Meanwhile, the Am class is open only to Bronze drivers, with participants required to be born or residing in Asia, Australia, or New Zealand.
With its mix of regional talent and international competition, the Mandalika round promises thrilling racing and reinforces Indonesia’s growing role in the global motorsport calendar. ***
