- Janice Tjen’s early exit in Charleston marks another setback as she struggles to regain form across recent WTA tournaments.
RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen’s struggles on the WTA Tour continued at the Charleston Open 2026, where she fell in straight sets to home favorite McCartney Kessler in the second round.
Competing at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, Janice was outplayed 2-6, 1-6, extending a run of early exits that also included the WTA 500 Merida, WTA 1000 Indian Wells, and WTA 1000 Miami.
Quoting Antara, the match began with both players trading service breaks, but Janice quickly lost momentum after trailing 1-4 in the opening set. Despite snatching one more game, Kessler closed out the set with ease.
In the second set, Janice squandered two break point chances in the opening game and fell behind 0-2. A series of unforced errors left her unable to recover, managing only one game before Kessler sealed victory.
Her doubles campaign also ended in disappointment. Partnering compatriot Aldila Sutjiadi, the pair lost to top seeds Aleksandra Krunic and Zhang Shuai 6-7, 5-7.
The defeats underline Janice’s ongoing challenge to rediscover form and confidence as she navigates a difficult stretch on the international circuit. ***
