Janice Tjen, Leylah Fernandez Form New Partnership at US Open 2026

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's tennis player Janice Tjen and Canada’s Leylah Fernandez will bring their singles experience together in a new women’s doubles partnership at the 2026 US Open, giving both players another opportunity to extend their campaign at the final Grand Slam of the season.

The Indonesian-Canadian duo will face Netherlands-Slovenia pair Isabelle Haverlag/Nina Radisic in the first round of the US Open women’s doubles, according to the WTA draw released on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, Antara reported.

For Janice, the doubles event offers a fresh opportunity to continue competing at the tournament after her singles campaign ended in the first round with a 2-6, 2-6 loss to fifth seed Mirra Andreeva.

Fernandez, meanwhile, enters the doubles competition with strong momentum from the singles draw.

The 23-year-old Canadian reached the third round after defeating China’s Zhu Lin 6-3, 6-2 in the first round and Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew 6-4, 6-1 in the second round.

A US Open runner-up in 2021, Fernandez has considerable experience at Flushing Meadows. Her partnership with Janice is particularly intriguing, however, as the two will make their first appearance together as a doubles team at the 2026 US Open.

The partnership also comes with an interesting singles history. Janice has a perfect 3-0 head-to-head record against Fernandez.

Janice defeated Fernandez in the first round of Wimbledon 2026, winning 6-1, 7-6(7), before beating her again 7-5, 6-4, in the round of 32 at the 2026 Dubai Tennis Championships.

Their first meeting in 2026 came in the first round of the Australian Open, where Janice prevailed 6-2, 7-6(7).

Their experience as singles opponents will now be put aside as they take on a new challenge together, with their first match as a doubles pair scheduled for Thursday, September 3. ***
