In a high-stakes all-Indonesian clash at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham on Thursday, March 5, 2026, men’s doubles pair Raymond Indra/Nikolaus Joaquin overcame a slow start to defeat their senior compatriots Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri. After losing the first game 8-21, Raymond and Joaquin adjusted their strategy to claim the next two games 21-14, 21-16 and advance to the round of eight.

“Praise God, the match went smoothly, and we were given the victory. In the first game, we were late to adapt to the court conditions,” Raymond said in a statement released on Friday, March 6, by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI), as quoted by Antara.

He explained that the court this time lacked any airflow, which affected control compared to their previous match, where wind conditions were a factor. “It was quite different from the first match, which still had some air movement. This time there was none,” he added.

Meanwhile, in the women’s doubles, Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma/Meilysa Trias Puspitasari, nicknamed Ana/Trias, secured Indonesia’s sixth spot in the quarterfinals by defeating Japan’s Rin Iwanaga/Kie Nakanishi in a three-game battle, 21-11, 18-21, 21-17.

“Thank god, today our play went well, and the strategy we prepared worked smoothly,” Ana said in the PBSI statement.

She acknowledged that they had a chance to close the match in straight games but lost focus in the latter stages of the second game, allowing the Japanese pair to push the contest to a deciding third game. “There was indeed a chance to win in two games, but at the end of the second game, the points were tight, and our focus dropped slightly, making us rush to finish,” Ana explained.

She added that their opponents tried to change the pace by increasing the game’s tempo, but Ana/Trias successfully adapted by varying their own rhythm. With these results, Indonesia strengthens its presence in the quarterfinals of the world’s oldest badminton tournament, setting the stage for more exciting matches in Birmingham. ***
