RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) has voiced its support for the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) new tournament format, which will also apply to the Indonesia Open.

Head of International Affairs at PBSI Executive Board, Bambang Roedyanto, said the decision to stage the Indonesia Open as an 11‑day Super 1000 event reflects Indonesia’s commitment to aligning with BWF’s global development strategy.

“From the organizers’ perspective, extending the duration to 11 days will inevitably raise operational costs,” Bambang noted in a written statement on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, as quoted by Antara

“However, PBSI views this as a long‑term investment to maintain the Indonesia Open’s status as a premier world tournament while meeting BWF’s global standards,” he added.

He said the new format offers significant benefits for athletes. The singles draw will expand from 32 to 48 players, creating broader opportunities to compete at the highest level.

“Athletes will also play more matches under the round‑robin system before advancing to the last 16,” Bambang explained.

Player welfare remains a key consideration. With a longer schedule and only two courts in use, athletes will enjoy more recovery time between matches. “This is expected to help sustain performance and match quality throughout the tournament,” he said.

Bambang also emphasized that the Indonesia Open will embrace a sportainment approach. “The extended duration allows for more entertainment elements and off‑court activations,” he said.

“Sportainment is an essential part of delivering a more engaging experience for fans in the arena and those following through broadcasts and digital platforms,” he concluded. ***
