RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian badminton greats are playing a direct role in shaping the World Badminton Museum, an initiative by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) in Qingdao, China. Their signatures on historic photographs and handprints will be permanently displayed as part of the museum’s collection.
According to a statement from the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) on Friday, January 23, 2026, the contribution of Indonesia’s champions is considered a vital element in realizing the museum’s vision of preserving the global history and culture of badminton.
Among the Indonesian legends involved are Rudy Hartono, Imelda Wiguna, Ricky Soebagdja, Icuk Sugiarto, Hariyanto Arbi, Hendrawan, Susy Susanti, Alan Budikusuma, and Sigit Budiarto. Modern-era icons such as Hendra Setiawan, Mohammad Ahsan, and Tontowi Ahmad also joined the initiative.
The signatures and handprints will be featured in a dedicated section honoring world champions and Olympic gold medalists, symbolizing the pinnacle of achievement in the sport.
BWF Project Director Stuart Borrie emphasized that the participation of legends from Indonesia and other countries adds significant historical value to the museum.
“We want this museum to be a place where people can learn about badminton’s history and recognize the figures who shaped the sport,” Borrie said in PBSI’s statement, as quoted by Antara
The World Badminton Museum is currently under construction at the BWF Qingdao International Exchange Center. Covering approximately 4,200 square meters across four floors, it will showcase the evolution of badminton, prestigious tournaments, and the contributions of legendary players across generations.
Borrie expressed hope that the museum will become a cultural destination as well as a sporting landmark.
“We hope people will come to Qingdao not only to see a beautiful city but also to visit the museum, learn about badminton’s history, its champions, and the personalities behind the sport. This museum should serve as a hub for cultural and historical exchange,” he concluded. ***
