RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Mitchell Lee Baker has officially become an Indonesian citizen after taking the oath of nationality on Monday, July 13, 2026. The move marks a strategic step by the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) to reinforce the composition of Indonesia’s national football team ahead of upcoming international competitions.

The oath ceremony was held at the Directorate General of Legal Administration, Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Jakarta, at 2 p.m. local time. The event was led by Director General Widodo and witnessed by PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir and Sumardji.

Erick expressed gratitude to President Prabowo Subianto and speakers of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) for their continued support of player naturalization. He also thanked Commission X, Commission XIII, and the Ministry of Law for their cooperation throughout the process.

“We at PSSI are deeply grateful for the extraordinary support from President Prabowo, the House speakers, and members of Commission X and XIII,” Erick said.

“Special appreciation also goes to Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas and Director General Widodo, who facilitated this process so well,” added the Minister of Youth and Sports.

Erick emphasized that strong synergy between government, parliament, and the federation was key to expediting the administrative process in accordance with regulations.

“This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to advancing Indonesian football on the international stage,” he noted.

Baker’s inclusion is part of PSSI’s strategy to strengthen the Garuda squad ahead of the 2026 ASEAN Hyundai Cup (AFF Cup). Standing at 196 cm, the striker is expected to add attacking variety and boost Indonesia’s scoring power.

Erick highlighted Baker’s ideal physique, sharp finishing, and playing style that fits coach John Herdman’s tactical needs. PSSI is confident the 19-year-old will adapt quickly and contribute significantly to the team.

“With his stature and goal-scoring instinct, Mitchell is a valuable addition to our frontline. Coach John Herdman already has plans to integrate him into the squad,” Erick said.

Baker himself expressed pride at officially becoming an Indonesian citizen and pledged to give his best for the national team. He said the moment was deeply meaningful for him and his family, who share Indonesian heritage.

Born in Melbourne, Australia, on December 11, 2006, Baker has Indonesian lineage through his mother. He began his career with Hong Kong Football Club before moving to Northcote City and Melbourne Victory in Australia.

He later developed his career in the United States with Black Rock FC while studying at Georgetown University. His impressive performances led Colorado Rapids to select him in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft, securing his place in the club. (Diffa Sephiawardhani)
