KBRN, Jakarta: Indonesia is facing legal action from the Israeli Gymnastics Federation after refusing to grant entry to its athletes for the upcoming World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta. 

Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir has firmly reiterated the Indonesian government's stance, which he says reflects the will of the public.

Minister Erick confirmed that six Israeli gymnasts were denied permission to compete in the championship. He also stated that his office is prepared to respond to Israel’s appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) over the revocation of their visas.

“We are aware of the Israeli Gymnastics Federation’s plan to file a lawsuit with CAS. We are anticipating this legal challenge,” Erick said in a press release issued Monday, October 13, 2025.

“There are specific regulations, both at the CAS level and, more importantly, within Indonesia, that govern this matter. We will face the lawsuit with dignity,” he added.

Erick emphasized that the government remains consistent in its decision not to issue visas to the Israeli gymnastics team. He also affirmed that this position aligns with directives from President Prabowo Subianto.

President Prabowo has stated unequivocally that Indonesia will not establish diplomatic relations with Israel. He reiterated that such relations will not be considered until Israel recognizes the existence of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.

Previously, Indonesian Gymnastics Federation (FGI) Chairwoman Ita Yuliati echoed the government’s stance. “Israel does not have diplomatic relations with Indonesia,” she said on Friday, October 10, 2025.

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), which oversees the championship, has expressed support for Indonesia’s decision. The FIG approved the move during a recent Executive Committee meeting.

“FIG supports Indonesia’s position,” Ita confirmed, adding that the decision was made with the safety of all delegations in mind.
